Thanks to all of our dedicated family members who came out last Saturday to help make the grounds of Smilie School beautiful!

The fine weather we are having has left our playground buzzing with activities!

Smilie School has a fine tradition of having outstanding vegetable gardens. The school uses these vegetables in our school lunch program. Students also eat them as we provide free fruit and vegetables at snack time each day. Virginia Haviland, Master Gardner, takes the lead on all of these preparations! Students also  take a major role in helping to: plant seeds, transplant small plants into bigger pots, prepare the raised beds and finally, plant the vegetables in the raised beds. This year, each class has "adopted" one of the raised beds. They chose the vegetables and will be responsible for watering and weeding as long as school is in session. Along the way, students are learning an incredible amount of general gardening information.

Third and fourth grade students conducted a science experiment that asked whether a whole cookie weighed the same as that same cookie crumbled. Many thanks to Mike Turner who gave us two   scales that the high school no longer needed. Students discovered that the cookies DID weigh exactly the same, no matter the form. However, we also made an important procedural notation....YOU
ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO USE THE SAME COOKIE!
